When I was still slinging ink, I did a lot of tribal designs. They seemed to be very popular with the 90's generation of punker kids. Tribal Tattoos are generally associated with the "Modern Primative" movement and incorporate a variety of artistic styles adopted from Aztec, Mayan and other ancient cultures. Most tribal tattoos are done in a single color, usually black with the most common being arm or leg bands. Here's a design I did on a client several years ago. It combines Mayan and Aztec styles.

History of Tattoo
the word tattoo is said to has two major derivations- from the polynesian word ‘ta’ which means striking something and the tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something’.
the history of tattoo began over 5000 years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them.
tattoos are created by inserting colored materials beneath the skins surface. the first tattoos probably were created by accident. someone had a small wound, and rubbed it with a hand that was dirty with soot and ashes from the fire. once the wound had healed, they saw that a mark stayed permanently.
despite the social sciences' growing fascination with tattooing, and the immense popularity of tattoos themselves, the practice has not left much of a historical record.

There's an Indian tribe called the Kharia tribe. The women have 111 tatooed right in the middle of their forehead apart from both sides of the temples and the forehands. Interesting!!

roughly, back then tribes used to practically cut the designs into the skin...obviously there was tones of blood pouring out so they had to rub it with ashes or leaves afterwards, and maybe put on some kind of a bandage on it... later, some tribes started making different kinds of ink, so they just rubbed that on the skin, after cutting it... and then in Japan they used to put the ink they made into something that worked like a needle and inject it into their skin, they still do that at some tat shops
